BTRT Patterns (on Etsy)

Thursday, 10 March 2011
CONGRATULATIONS to Nicole!
"My favorite from the gallery is definitely Queen of Hearts. It's got all my favorite colors, all mixed together!!!!"

Become a fan on our BTRT Facebook page to get the latest giveaway news
(weekly giveaways!)
and follow this blog, too, so you won't miss a thing...
(see 'Followers' box on left hand side).
It is giveaway time again (yay!). If you are an artisan and/or small business owner interested in offering an item for a Giveaway, please send me a note for all the details.

This weekend we welcome Scarlet of Huckleberry Knits~ whose dyes yarn under the wonderful banner of 'where color sings'. ♥  Scarlet notes that when dyeing yarn, a process where art and science meet, that adding the last colour creates "a sort of visual resonance, like adding in a note that was missing from a musical chord".

Desert Twilight on Silk & Silver
Scarlet has had an exciting year, so I asked her to share a little:
2010 was a great year for Huckleberry Knits. My sales have grown to the point where last month, I left my job as a water resources planner for a local government agency to focus on my dyeing business. I'm amazed at how much energy I have now for every aspect of my business--dyeing, marketing, photography. Well, except doing taxes. I might have a tiny procrastination problem there.

One thing that I really enjoy is selling at yarn and fiber shows. I love the chance to talk to knitters and crocheters in person, and just feeling that excited buzz in the air when there's a crowd of people
who share a common passion for beautiful fiber. I've added more shows to my schedule this year, and I'm already starting to dye for my June and July shows in Oregon, Black Sheep Gathering and Sock Summit. I'm also hoping to continue streamlining my process and add a couple of new wholesale accounts.
knitting, yarn, hand dyed, free, giveaway
Hyacinth on 8 ply Merino
What is your favourite part of the creative process?
Right now, my favorite thing is to dye spinning fiber. Colors can meld together in unexpected ways, even with tried-and-true combinations. I always get a little spark of suspense when I apply a new color and watch the dye run up the fiber and strike--what's going to happen? Somehow I feel more free to experiment with color when I'm dyeing fiber than when I'm working with yarn, and I think that sense of suspense and curiosity definitely feeds my mad-scientist urges.
Dusk on Superwash Merino fiber
Tell us what a great family evening looks like for your family?A great evening is eating something delicious for dinner (we all like to cook) and then playing games together. As our six-year-old son gets older, we're able to play more interesting games; two of our current favorites are Traverse and Kill Doctor Lucky. We also have a Wii, which has been even more fun than I thought it would be!

I think the Apple Berry Yarn attracted my attention. :) Not sure if I just really enjoy the colors or if they kinda remind me of Christmas (which my kids STILL insist on celebrating). Haha *Sigh* My boys LOVE the blue, my daughter, the purple. ;)

Hope this works out!!
