I am so excited!
Our little group of six and almost-six year olds here in town are going to get together for a book club this summer. While sewing I have been plotting and dreaming and workingout the details for our little gang, and decided to share it with you.
And so, Storybook Summer 2011 was born...!
It is a simple to organize and run program of 6-7 'book club' gatherings for kids (aged 4-8 ideally, although it could be adapted for older kids/ chapter stories) for 5-8 children in the same age group. The children are encouraged to read all week long and share their favourite story at the club meeting. The meeting will also include a feature story, chosen by the host, to be read aloud, followed by discussion, snack and play time.
Everything you need to know can be sent to you as a PDF + one WORD file.
If you are interested in the program, I am more than happy to email you the materials~ simply visit our Book Club page for all the info and email address.
Focusing on the joy of reading and sharing this socially with friends rather than on particular reading skills, this group will work well with our 'Sixers' whose reading abilities range from emergent to independent, allowing them to participate at their own level and pace and to all share in the discussion around a common book at the meeting (without having to purchase books... hello library!).
(And yes, I do make a sneaky little plug for some unstructured outdoor play!)
If you do decide to start up a club, let me know, so I can link you up and keep track of the groups through the summer (and you can share photos, feedback and more!). If there is interest, I may add a Facebook Page, so check back on the Book Club page here on the BTRT blog, soon.
Wouldn't it be fun to have groups around the world getting together for the love of reading?! ♥♥
